Fresh Ideas for Organizing Your Closet

Don't use it? Get rid of it.

Closets are supposed to be highly organized spaces where we store clothing, supplies, linens and other items that we don't want lying around the house for all to see. Ideally, you can go to your closet, any type of closet, and find a sweater, shoes, trousers, dress, linens, towels, a book or whatever. And you find it immediately.

Yeah, right.

In the real world, closets are overflowing with stuff — clothes you haven't worn for years or toiletries you bought and forgot about. And, of course, you can never find something when you need it. So here are tips keeping your closets organized.

Clothes
Clothes closets may be the worst offenders. There are any number of reasons to hang onto clothes — you really like that sweater, or you know you're going to lose the 10 pounds needed to fit into that pair of jeans again.

Pick a Saturday and devote it to your clothes closet. Look at every bit of clothing and ask yourself how often you wear it, if it fits and how much space it takes up. Gather what you don't wear and donate it to a charity or, if you want to make money, take it to a resale shop.

Once you've whittled down what is in there, look at the space. Put seasonal clothing where you can reach it and organize it by type: sweaters together, blouses together, shoes and so on. Move clothing for the current season to the front where you will see it and wear it.

Any unused space, such as a wall, could be used for shelving. Or, if you have a lot of accessories, you can use the vertical space as a pin board for jewelry, scarves or other items that take up space in a drawer.

Linens
Organize your linen closet by type — sheets and blankets on one shelf and towels and washcloths on another. As with your clothes, organize items by season. You're not going to use the flannel sheets in the summer, so move them to the back of the shelf during that time.

Also, be sure to go through it all and discard or donate what you don't use.

Supplies
The strategy for a supply closet is somewhat different, as you are likely using what is in that closet more frequently. In this case, organize your supplies by how you use them so you can find them in the same place. Another idea is to make a list of what is in the closet, perhaps on a wipe-off board or small chalkboard, and keep track of what you use and what needs to be replaced.

The key to closet organization is to ask yourself if you really need or use what is in there. If the answer is no, get rid of it and organize what is left.
